7 Signs Your Gutters Need Repair or Replacement

Most gutter problems worsen slowly — until they cause expensive damage. Seven signs your gutters need professional attention now.

1. Visible sagging

A sagging run means hanger failure — hangers pulled out of softened fascia, spaced too far apart, or overloaded by seasons of debris. Sagging gutters hold standing water, which invites mosquitoes and accelerates corrosion. This is a repair that should not wait.

2. Gutters pulling away from fascia

When the gutter separates from the fascia board, water runs behind it and straight down the wood. Caught early it’s a re-fastening job; caught late it’s a carpentry bill before new gutters can even go up.

3. Leaking seams

Water dripping from joints during rain means the sealant has failed. One or two seams can be repaired. Leaks throughout the system — the usual result of several freeze-thaw winters — usually make seamless replacement cheaper than chasing each seam.

4. Peeling paint or rust below the gutter line

Paint peeling on fascia or siding directly below the gutters says water has been escaping consistently, and for a while. The material underneath may already be starting to rot. Act on this one before it becomes structural.

5. Water pooling at the foundation

One of the most serious signs. Overflowing runs, blocked downspouts, or discharge landing at the base of the wall all soak the foundation soil — and over time that means cracking, basement moisture, and real structural damage.

6. Overflow during ordinary rain

Overflow from a clogged gutter is a cleaning problem. Overflow from a clean gutter in normal rain means the system is undersized for the roof feeding it — which is a sizing problem, solved with bigger gutters or more downspouts, not more cleaning.

7. Cracks, holes, or rust in the metal

Small holes can be patched, but visible rust means the material is failing everywhere, not just where you can see it. At that point repair is good money after bad; a new seamless system is the better investment.
